Ten Elements of Deinstitutionalization (DI)

Ten Elements of Deinstitutionalization (DI)

Thursday, 1 December, 2016 - WWO organized a seminar with James Chamberlain from Lumos International on the topic of Deinstitutionalization.

Chamberlain presented the Ten Elements of Deinstitutionalization (DI) as they were developed and are practiced by Lumos. In this informative session, he provided a summary of each element and illustrated the risks and challenges involved in the process. Chamberlain emphasised the importance of child protection and of developing well-designed family-support and community services. Around 40 participants had the opportunity to ask questions, and share their experiences surrounding DI.

Lumos International collaborates with governments, professionals, caregivers, other NGOs, faith-based groups, as well as communities, families, and children to help transform outdated systems that arbitrarily separate children from families. Lumos shares expertise and experience and organizes trainings in the skills needed to run family-focused, community-based care systems.
